  • DESCRIPTION: Engraved by F. J. Lengling after the painting by Thomas Anshutz (1851-1912) in the collection of the Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco. While some of the figures were inspired by the ancient classics, the setting and the candidness are decidedly modern for late 19th century painting. Today this work is regarded by most art history scholars as an important forerunner of the Ashcan School of American painting.
