Philada” and published by William Duane in 1809. “This engraving, which was copied on various United States postage stamps, was published in Franklin’s “Works,” V. 4, Philadelphia, 1809, as a frontispiece. It is after the bust made by Giuseppe Cerrachi in 1784.” (NYPL, 100 Notable American Engravers, 16).<br><br> A handsome portrait of Benjamin Franklin, widely regarded as one of the most accomplished of the American founding fathers. A man of remarkable intellect and versatility, Franklin was a scientist, writer, printer, and publisher, as well as one of the nation’s most effective diplomats. During the Revolutionary War he served as American Minister to France, securing crucial French support for the cause of independence. He remains the only individual to have signed all four of the foundational documents of the United States: the Declaration of Independence, the Treaty of Alliance with France, the Treaty of Peace with Great Britain, and the Constitution.
