• DESCRIPTION: Painted by Heine J. Kummer & Dopler. Engraved by Himley.

The composition offers a carefully rendered panoramic view of New York City, distinguished by its elevated vantage point. The perspective strongly suggests derivation from direct observation via a tethered balloon, likely positioned in the vicinity of Governor’s Island, thereby situating the image within early experiments in aerial representation prior to the advent of photography. This unusual viewpoint enables a comprehensive visualization of the spatial organization, shoreline, and built environment.

Of particular historical significance is the depiction of the Battery projecting into the surrounding waters. This feature documents a transitional phase in the city’s coastal topography, preceding the land reclamation efforts completed by 1857 that substantially altered the southern tip of Manhattan. As such, the engraving functions not only as an aesthetic object but also as a valuable visual record of New York’s evolving urban landscape in the mid-nineteenth century.
