  • MEDIUM: Wood engraving,

    DATE: 1862.

  • EDITION SIZE: Edition unknown. Image size 5 1/4 x 4 3/8" (13.3 x 11.1 cm).

  • DESCRIPTION: In 1862 Whistler designed four wood engravings for the London periodical "Once a Week." Many of his Pre-Raphaelite friends were illustrating poems and short stories at this moment and the decade proved to be the start of a new flowering of British illustration. Founded in 1859, "Once a Week" supported the movement and was known as a "journal of the younger men." Whister here responds to an article titled "The Relief Fund in Lancashire: A Commendation" with a related verse concerning th flight of the Lancashire weavers. This is a proof for a wood engraving published July 26, 1862.
