  • DESCRIPTION: A 19th-century perspective of George Washington forcing the British to leave Boston on March 17, 1776, captured as a steel engraving by J. Godfrey. Washington successfully fortified Dorchester Heights along Boston's southern border, making the city vulnerable to attack. In response, General Howe peacefully packed up his men, allowing the Americans to reclaim the city without struggle.
