DESCRIPTION: E.H. Kerick pinx; I. Smith ex.

Heraclitus is depicted as the weeping philosopher and Democritus as the laughing philosopher. Heraclitus was considered arrogant and depressed, a misanthrope who was subject to melancholia. Consequently, he became known as "the weeping philosopher" in contrast to the ancient philosopher Democritus, who was known as "the laughing philosopher". Heraclytus shown as a bearded old man, half-length, standing on the left and weeping as he leans inwards, looking at the globe; Democritus standing on the right, one hand resting on the globe and smiling towards the viewer as he points at it. Democritus, known in antiquity as the ‘laughing philosopher’ because of his emphasis on the value of ‘cheerfulness,’ was one of the two founders of ancient atomist theory. Democritus standing on the right, one hand resting on the globe and smiling towards the viewer as he points at it; after E. van Heemskerck; state republished by Smith, with land sea and 'Ocea[n]' scratched on the globe.
