Facsimile signature as title.

Stuart’s “Athenaeum type” portrait of Washington.

Gilbert Stuart (1755-1828) painter born in the Rhode Island Colony who is widely considered one of the leading portraitist of a new nation. Trained in England and Ireland, the artist introduced a looser, brushy style to American portraits, painting figures that were both grand and lifelike. Stuart painted each of the first five US presidents from life. At the time the Washington sat for Stuart, the artist apparently tried to relax his sitter, offering, "Now, sir, you must let me forget that you are General Washington and that I am Stuart, the painter," to which the president responded, “Mr. Stuart need never feel the need for forgetting who he is and who General Washington is.” Certainly one of the best known likenesses of Washington.
