  • DESCRIPTION: Translated title : Frank Leslie's Alaska Expedition. The steamer "Patterson" approaches Chilkat. According to a photograph taken in the evening..." In the spring of 1890, W.J. Arkell, the editor of Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper, dispatched a team of reporters, along with scouts and native guides, to Alaska to explore the nation's newest territory. These journalists were tasked with writing vivid accounts of their adventures and creating illustrations of the unusual sights they encountered for readers back home. The richly illustrated articles, serialized throughout 1890 and 1891, provide a unique insight into Gilded Age adventure journalism. The reporters crafted varied narratives that combined first-person adventure stories with naturalist and ethnographic observations, historical insights, and political commentary, all while highlighting Alaska's resources. They often relied on common stereotypes of the American West and its inhabitants, promoting territorial expansion under the banner of Manifest Destiny. This research suggests that Alaska's status as a new territory, with its vast spaces and resources, prompted the journalists to adopt views reminiscent of the earlier frontier era. This description is based on the German edition of Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper, known as Frank Leslie's Illustrirte Zeitung (New York , 1857-1894). The image, captured as a wood engraving, has been colorized to highlight the details.
