DESCRIPTION: "I. B. & P. C. Smith pinxt." and "Sold by Myers & Smith 59 Fulton Street." The original watercolor was painted by Joseph Smith (I. B. Smith) and his brother Peter C. Smith is listed as a 'Printer & Bookseller'. Earlier descriptions of this print do not credit John Hill (1770-1850) as the engraver until Richard Koke found evidence for the attribution in Hill's account book (in the New York Historical Society) and entered it into his 'Checklist' in 1961. Although this view of Wesley Chapel was published in 1824 Gloria Gilda Deak, in her book ‘Picturing America’, states that it depicts a scene before 1817. The figure at the Church door is possibly Peter Williams the New York slave who was purchased by Wesley Chapel (the John Street Methodist Church) in 1783 and gained his freedom in 1796.
