DESCRIPTION: Steward Holland was a crewman on the S.S. Arctic which sank on September 27, 1854 after a collision with the S. S. Vesta. It was reported that there were 400 on board, 88 survived, mostly members of the crew, all of the women and children on the ship perished. Steward Holland an engineer in training was instructed to go the bow and fire the ship's signal cannon at one-minute intervals in hopes of attracting attention to their sinking. He continued at his post until the ship slipped under the water. He did not survive.
