Magee Lith. <BR><BR> The American Republican Party, precursor to the American Know-Nothing Party of the 1850’s was a Protestant nativist group that opposed the Catholics, especially Irish Catholics. The group arranged a meeting on May 3, 1844 in the Kensington District of Philadelphia, which was predominately Irish Catholic. They were driven out of the area by a group of Irish residents. They returned in larger numbers on May 6, 1844. George Shifler was the first of several killed during the ensuing clashes which continued over three days a number of homes and churches were destroyed. <BR>
