Chase, President Lincoln, Gideon Wells, Caleb Smith, William H. Seward, Montgomery Blair, and Edward Bates. Francis B. Carpenter was artist with the most intimate association with Lincoln, having lived for months in the White House, Carpenter was largely responsible for creating the public images of Lincoln as emancipator and family man. Carpenter worked from life sketches and photographs chosen by Mary Todd Lincoln.
