  • DESCRIPTION: This view is plate 39 from the U. S. Pacific Railroad Expedition & Surveys - 47th & 49th Parallels. Isaac I. Stevens had become the first Governor of Washington Territory in 1853. He led this survey in the hope that the first transcontinental railroad link would serve his new territory - linking the Great Lakes to the Puget Sound. However, this ambitiousness caused a serious war with the local Indian tribes. His railroad link would not become a reality until the completion of the Great Northern Railroad in 1893.
