DESCRIPTION: A late and apparently unrecorded view by Thaddeus Mortimer Fowler.

Reps records two different town views of Scio, both by Fowler, and both produced in 1899. Both are smaller in size to this view and while both show many oil derricks, they are completely different images. This print shows hundreds of oil Derricks and in the lower left shows an image of H.A. Snyder, the discover of the Sico oil field and John Long, and the first drilling machine, who drilled the first well. Central in the title is a view of Scio College, to the right is a view of the Pharmacy department building. On the left is a view of Scio public school. A reference key identifies 8 prominent buildings and the first well drilled within the town.

In 1898, oil was discovered within the town and the population went from approximately 900 to 12,000 in about two years and approximately 1,000 oil wells were drilled. The local college attendance dropped from 300 students to 25, as the students rushed to the oil field for jobs. The oil boom lasted for about two years and town decreased to the previous size. As to Scio College, Parts of it merged into Mount Union College, while its pharmacy school merged with what would become the University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy in 1908.

With this print being a photo-offset, our first though was that it was an early reproduction of a lithograph. After research and careful study of the piece and of Fowler’s work, we have come to the conclusion that this print is based on an original watercolor – pen & ink drawing that he produced. A number of his later production was in fact via offset. It is very more period and is quite possible that either H.S. Snyder or John Long had a hand in the publishing of this print.
