DESCRIPTION: Engraved by Frederic Cazenave. Imprimé par Finot.

The image shows a young woman and a child looking through a Zograscope at engraved views. The engravings viewed in a Zograscope have a strong sense of perspective, and the title is often engraved, correctly on the print and in reverse, usually on top. This is because the image is reflected off a mirror and through a strong magnifying glass. The title in reverse is needed so you can read the title while looking through this device. The mirror and magnifying glass enhance the strong perspective giving the illusion of depth. These were very popular the last quarter of the eighteenth century and many engravings were produced to be viewed in the Zograscope.
ADDITIONAL INFO:
CONDITION: Poor condition, tears and breaks through the image. Restoration was begun but never finished, likely due to the condition. Still an amazing image showing a device from the eighteenth-century.
