DESCRIPTION: This engraving by James Basire, created in 1776, depicts Andrew Marvell (1621–1678), the esteemed poet and politician, shown with a dignified and contemplative expression befitting his legacy. Marvell was a close friend of John Milton and served as his assistant as Latin Secretary to the Council during the Protectorate, becoming, in effect, Cromwell's Poet Laureate. Renowned for his literary brilliance, Marvell's Horatian Ode upon Cromwell's Return from Ireland (1650) is celebrated as his greatest political poem. He is perhaps best known for lyrical masterpieces such as To His Coy Mistress and The Garden. Following the Restoration, Marvell turned his sharp wit to political satire, cementing his reputation as a defender of liberty and a master of verse. As MP for Kingston-upon-Hull, he balanced his poetic achievements with a steadfast commitment to public service.
