DESCRIPTION: This engraving depicts a three-quarter-length portrait of Esek Hopkins, the first Commander in Chief of the Continental Navy, during the American Revolutionary War. The artwork shows Hopkins in a naval engagement, standing confidently, wearing his uniform and holding a drawn sword, symbolizing his leadership and martial prowess. The print was created in Nurnberg by G.N. Raspe in 1778 and is featured in Geschichte der Kriege in und ausser Europa by Christoph Heinrich Korn (1776-1784).
ADDITIONAL INFO: This piece is in a n 8 x 9.5 inch archival mylar and backed with archival quality mat board for safe handling.
CONDITION: The print shows some staining on the left lapel of Hopkins and along the margins, but it retains its full margins and is a strong impression. A handwritten note identifying the engraver is visible within the plate line, and a charming note from an earlier collector has been carefully preserved in the back of the Mylar sleeve.
