  • DESCRIPTION: A rare mezzotint portrait of fictional Virginian Indian based on the factual “rebellion” of Nathaniel Bacon’s in 1676.<br><br> The story of Bacon’s Rebellion was turned into a play by the woman arthor Aphra Behn (1640-1689) The Widdow Ranter, or, the History of Bacon in Virginia.This play was first performed in London in 1690 and romanticized Bacon’s Rebellion. Nathaniel Bacon was turned into a tragic hero, who was mutually in love with Cavarnio’s wife, Semernia. The image of the “Indian King” or Cavarnio in the play is believed to be actor John Bowman (1664-1739). <br><br> Signed in the plate “B: Lens ex:” Bernard Lens II (1659-1725), was one of the pioneers of the medium of mezzotint engraving. Bernard Lens II was the father of better known miniaturist Bernard Lens III. Father and son collaborated on joint projects. During the 1710 tour of Native American chiefs to England, Bernard Lens III produced miniature portraits of four of the chieftains which the father, Bernard Lens II turned into mezzotint, “The Four Indian Kings.”
