• DESCRIPTION: A very decorative and attractive set of maps. California is shown as an island on two of the maps.<br><br> George Matthaus Seutter the elder was one of the most important and prolific German map publishers of the 18th century. He was born in Augsburg and in 1697 left for Nuremberg, where he served as an apprentice to the renowned cartographer and engraver Johann Baptist Homann (1664-1724). Somewhere around 1707, Seutter returned to Augsburge, where he eventually set up his own publication business, selling maps, atlases and globes. It would come to rival that of his former teacher. In 1731, Seutter was awarded the title of Imperial Geographer by Holy Roman Emperor Charles VI. Many of Seutter's maps have elaborate, decorate cartouches.<br><br> Following his death, Seutter's firm was taken over by his son, Albrecht Carl Seutter (1722-1762), and then his son-in law, Tobias Conrad Lotter (1717-1777).
