• DESCRIPTION: This leaf, Folium CCVII (recto) from the Nuremberg Chronicle (1493), is part of one of the most ambitious and influential illustrated books of the 15th century. Compiled by Hartmann Schedel and printed by Anton Koberger, the Chronicle presents a sweeping history of the world, interweaving religious narratives, biblical events, historical figures, and medieval conceptions of geography and knowledge. Published in both Latin and German editions, it features hundreds of woodcut illustrations by Michael Wolgemut and Wilhelm Pleydenwurff, with possible contributions from a young Albrecht Dürer.

This particular leaf, Folium CCVIII (recto), recounts the lives of Saint Dominic and Saint Francis of Assisi, two of the most influential religious figures of the 13th century. Saint Dominic, founder of the Dominican Order, is described as a devoted preacher and fierce opponent of heresy, his birth foreshadowed by divine visions. His woodcut portrait shows him in a white tunic and black cloak, with a star on his forehead and a dog carrying a flaming torch, symbolizing his role as a guiding light of faith. Saint Francis, founder of the Franciscan Order, is depicted in his simple habit, hands raised in exhortation, embodying his radical embrace of poverty and spiritual devotion. The text also records extraordinary natural events, including earthquakes in Antioch, Tripoli, and Damascus, a tidal surge in Sicily, and a miraculous celestial sign—a radiant star and a beam of light extending into the heavens. Accompanying these accounts is a woodcut illustrating a stormy sky, with flashes of lightning and heavy rain, reflecting the medieval fascination with divine omens and the forces of nature.
