DESCRIPTION: This aquatint after George Isham Parkyns, executed by Paolo Fumagalli and published in Il Costume Antico e Moderno… l’America, a comprehensive 21-volume work by Giulio Ferrario. Issued in Milan by Antonio Fortunato Stella, the series documented the customs, architecture, and landscapes of various cultures, including the Americas. This particular engraving presents a view of Mount Vernon’s west front, capturing the grandeur and neoclassical symmetry of George Washington’s estate. Printed with the number “47” in the upper-right corner and signed “P. Fumagalli f.” in the lower-right, the image reflects Ferrario’s dedication to historical and geographical illustration. As the founder of the Società Tipografica de’ Classici Italiani and director of the Braidense National Library in Milan, Ferrario played a crucial role in curating visual representations of world heritage. The work of Fumagalli, an Italian engraver, brings precision and depth to Parkyns' original design, translating the stately elegance of Washington’s residence into an atmospheric aquatint.
