DESCRIPTION: "Engraved by T. Holloway from a Picture painted by Mr. Stuart in 1795. : in the possession of Samuel Vaughan Esqr."

Engraved portrait of George Washington, after the famous Gilbert Stuart portrait. Washington is shown in half-length, with the right side of his face exposed, set in an engraved rectangular frame. Stuart painted three famous portraits of the President: the first in 1795 known as the “Vaughan” portrait, after an early owner; the second, known as the “Lansdowne”, shows Washington in full length; and the third, an uncompleted bust portrait showing the left side of his face, referred to as the “Athenaeum” portrait. Stuart’s “Vaughan” portrait never had the same prominence as the other two likenesses. However, it did find some popularity in London, where it was engraved by Holloway in 1796 as an illustration in the third volume of Johann Kaspar "Lavatar’s Essays on Physiognomy." This inspired additional engravings by London’s Ridley, Walker, and Roberts.
