  • DESCRIPTION: Text above image: It is the first - oh dash it from thy lips - Look down - what lies beneath it's sparkling foam?. See shame and sin and death to him who sips ' And wife and helpless babes berest of home.<br><br> This black and white print depicts a farmer stopping for a drink at an establishment "licensed to retail spirits." A hay wagon pulled by oxen waits in the road. A distillery is visible in the background with a cross above its chimney indicating its priority to serious drinkers. A verse describing the evils of drink appears below the title.<br><br> At the New York Public Library is a proof example of this print (lacking upper verse) that has a manuscript note, "F.H. Lane del." Fitz Henry Lane. The quality of the lithography makes it certainly plausible.<br><br>

  • ADDITIONAL INFO: When found, this lithograph was mounted on an early board with an old book binder's label on the verso, "Seth Goldsmith, Book-Binder, Franklin Avenue,... Boston. Old Books re-bound" The print was professionally conserved, removed from the board and retains the original Goldsmith label.
