A proof impression printed in sepia, the lower publication line was not inked for this impression. <br><br> Stauffer notes this plate when first issued was rectangular and was published by M. Carey, Philadelphia in 1801. with the title "Thomas Jefferson President of the United States." Then the plate was acquired by A. Day of Philadelphia. The Day impressions are normally found printed in black ink and have the "A Day" lower publication line. This imprint lacks the "A. Day" pub. line and was likely among the earliest imprints from the new plate. The Day imprints are undated but were likely published during Jefferson's Presidency. <BR><BR> Rembrandt Peale (1778 – 1860) painted this portrait between 1799 and the sprint of 1800 when Jefferson was Vice-President.<br><br> Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826) One of the Founding Fathers of the United States. Principal author of the Declaration of Independence, second Vice President under John Adams (1797-1801) and third President of the United States (1801-1809).
