DESCRIPTION: Drawn and engraved by H. Houston. <br><br> John Adams, 1735-1826. Second President of the United States (1797-1801). Signer of the Declaration of Independence. On Nov. 1, 1800, in his second evening in the White House, he wrote his wife, "Before I end my letter, I pray Heaven to bestow the best of Blessings on this House and all that shall hereafter inhabit it. May none but honest and wise Men ever rule under this roof." <br><br> Houston was among the earliest skilled stipple engravers to work in the United States. Most likely a native of Ireland, Houston worked in Philadelphia in the late 1790s where he produced engraved portraits of Washington, Rittenhouse, Kosciusko and at least two of John Adams.
