English officer, served in America during the French and Indian War with fellow officers George Washington, Charles Lee and Thomas Gage. He was wounded at Fort Duquesne in 1755 and retired from the army in 1765. In 1772 Horatio Gates moved with his family to Virginia. Gates accepted appointment as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Virginia militia; and when the Revolution broke out, he took the American side and fought with distinction.

In 1775 he was made an Adjutant General of the Army, with the rank of Brigadier General. He served in the Saratoga campaign and was in command at the Battle of Camden in South Carolina. In this print Gates has his hand on a stack of paper with the caption, “Arti of Convention between Gen. Gates and Gen. Burgoyne.”

Se vend à Londres chez Thom. Hart. This French-language inscription translation "Sold in London at the shop of Thom. Hart" appears beneath the mezzotints. Though the imprint claims it was sold in London, the entire caption is in French. The consistent use of French not only for the title but also for the descriptive lines strongly suggests that the mezzotint was produced in France for a French-speaking audience, with the reference to Thom. Hart in London likely added to lend it commercial credibility.
