Ellis.

Henry Laurens (1724-1792) was born in Charlestown, South Carolina, where he owned and operated a number of plantations. He was elected to the Commons House of Assembly but later moved to England for three years before returning to South Carolina politics.

Once in South Carolina, Laurens served in the Continental Congress from 1777-1780 and later served John Hancock as president. He was captured and held hostage on suspicion of treason in the Tower of London for over a year while en route to negotiate a treaty with Holland. Laurens was eventually released in exchange for Lord Cornwallis. After his return, he was involved in the peace negotiations with Great Britain along with his fellow patriots Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, and John Jay. Laurens served as an unofficial minister to England until 1784, when he returned to New York and his role in Congress. He retired to South Carolina in 1792 where he lived until his death.
