  • DESCRIPTION: The construction of the fortifications that would become known as the 'Lines of Communication' was first directed on the 10th August 1642. However, according to historian Simon Marsh, it was not until 24th October, in the aftermath of the Battle of Edgehill, that the City of London's Militia Committee ordered that "ramparts and trenches" be constructed around the City of London and its suburbs.<br><br> A numbered key identifies 23 positions.<br><br> This map appeared in Thornton's New and Complete History and Survey of London and Westminster.
