DESCRIPTION: Benedict Arnold, 1741- 1801, was a military hero for both sides in the Revolutionary war. He began his career as an American Patriot in May 1775 when he and Ethan Allen captured Fort Ticonderoga on Lake Champlain. Arnold's heroics continued in September, when he led an expedition of 1,150 riflemen against Quebec. Arnold has gone down in history not as a hero but as a villain, a military traitor who, in 1780, as commander of the American fort at West Point, schemed to hand it over to the British. His role came to light after the British spy, Major John Andre, was captured with incriminating documents in Arnold's handwriting that included details of the fort. In the end, he was despised in America and treated with coldness and contempt in Britain. He died in Canada as a poor man without a country.
