  • DESCRIPTION: Painted by L. Le Paon. Engraved by N. le Mire. <BR><BR> This print depicts General Lafayette in a full-length portrait, standing while holding two swords in his left hand. The battle scene behind him is Yorktown, Virginia. He is shown with his attendant James who is holding his horse behind him at right. Lafayette commissioned Le Paon to paint his portrait as a present for George Washington. In the title, a wreath encircles the word “Liberte” and pole topped with a liberty cap, from which rays of light emanate.<BR><BR> The painting is currently in the collections of Lafayette College.
