DESCRIPTION: A striking early 18th-century mezzotint portrait of William Smith (also spelled Smyth, c.1460–1514), Bishop of Lincoln and co-founder of Brasenose College, Oxford. Rendered by the accomplished engraver John Faber the Elder, the image presents Smith in three-quarter length, adorned in episcopal robes and mitre. He holds a crosier in one hand and a book in the other, symbolic of both ecclesiastical authority and scholarly legacy. Below, his coat of arms is prominently displayed in the margin. The work is part of a broader series of portrait mezzotints by Faber Sr., known for documenting notable English clergy and academics of earlier centuries.
