• DESCRIPTION: This set of watercolor miniatures on whale bone features finely rendered portraits of key American Revolutionary War generals, arranged in a clockwise sequence: General Anthony Wayne, General Horatio Gates, General Nathanael Greene, General Morgan Lewis, General Daniel Morgan, and General Israel Putnam, with General George Washington at the center. The portraits are executed with remarkable precision and sensitivity, evoking the neoclassical dignity associated with John Trumbull’s iconic depictions of the founding generation.

Though born of deception, these miniatures remain both skillful and historically evocative. Created by Edouard Frossard late in his career, they were designed to imitate the style and substance of Trumbull’s work and were painted on whale bone to enhance their period appearance. Frossard intended these works to pass as authentic Trumbull originals or early patriotic tributes, appealing to the growing market for Revolutionary-era relics. While ultimately exposed as forgeries, they stand as enduring examples of Frossard’s technical virtuosity and his deep familiarity with the visual language of American patriotism.

Despite their spurious origins, the artistic merit of these miniatures commands attention. Frossard’s careful composition, mastery of miniature portraiture, and sensitivity to period likenesses give the set a compelling presence. Even as they fail to convince as genuine Trumbulls, they succeed as testaments to the enduring appeal of Revolutionary iconography and the persuasive power of skilled craftsmanship.
