  • DESCRIPTION: This spirited print captures the chaos of a fogbound London street, exaggerating the city's famously overcast weather for comic effect. A boy pushing a handcart barrels into a fashionable lady, knocking her to the ground just as a startled dandy steps on her neck. Another gentleman is struck by a lamplighter's ladder. On the right, three ragged link-boys dart through the gloom—one caught in the act of picking a pocket. Their torches, along with the lamplighter's flame and a faint glow in the distance, barely penetrate the dense fog. In typical Humphrey fashion, the scene turns a familiar inconvenience into a raucous satire of urban life in London.
