DESCRIPTION: <b>Lord Baltimore</b><br><br> This 1657 line engraving by Abraham Blooteling depicts Cecil Calvert, 2nd Baron Baltimore (1606–1675), the founder of the Maryland colony in North America. A key figure in early colonial history, Calvert inherited the charter for Maryland from his father, George Calvert, and governed the province for over forty years, promoting religious tolerance for English Catholics.<br><br> Abraham Blooteling (1634-1690) an accomplished Dutch engraver and print publisher, is known for his refined technique and detailed portraiture. He is associated with over sixty portrait engravings, and this particular work reflects the formal style and dignified presentation typical of mid-17th-century European portrait prints.
