DESCRIPTION: Painted by John Trumbull. Engraved by A. B. Durand.<br><br> John Trumbull worked on the painting for this iconic image for 33 years. He began the painting at Thomas Jefferson’s residence in Paris, utilizing Jefferson’s first-hand accounts of the event. Jefferson also made a rough sketch of the assembly room at Independence Hall that Trumbull used. Trumbull dedicated himself to portraying from life as many of the forty-eight signers as he could, which is one of the reasons the painting was not completed until 1818. In order to publicize and raise funds was to commission this engraving. Offered on a subscription basis for a price of $20.00, with half up front and the balance upon completion and publishing of the plate, which took three years. As popular as the painting was, the print was much less so. Twenty dollars in 1820 was a large sum of money. In the end, he barely broke even and explains why the print is not all that common in the market. <br><br> John Trumbull (1756-1843), a Historical, portrait, and landscape painter.
