  • DESCRIPTION: Dessine par le Barbier Peintre du Roi. Grave par Godefroy de d'Academie Imp le et Royale du Vienne &c. (Engraver Francois Godefroy (c.1743-1819). <BR><BR> This scarce French produced engraving depicts the first meeting of the First Continental Congress at Carpenter's Hall in Philadelphia on September 5, 1774. Individual delegates are not recognizable although the gentleman on the elevated chair is likely Peyton Randolf of Virginia, who was the first President of the Continental Congress. To his right is likely Charles Thompson, the first Secretary of said body.<br><br> There are very few period pictorial records illustrating political events as opposed to military events leading up to the Revolutionary War.<br><br> Appeared in "Essais historiques et politiques sur les Anglo-Americains." Published in Bruxelles.<br><br>
