DESCRIPTION: Independence Hall.

This early view of the State House in Philadelphia, later known as Independence Hall, was published in The Gentleman’s Magazine just before the outbreak of the French and Indian War and more than two decades before the American Revolution. Construction of the building began in 1732 and was completed in 1753, though it had already been in use by the colonial government of Pennsylvania as early as 1735.

The image presents the State House as a symbol of civic pride and political authority in the growing city. Designed to house the Assembly of Pennsylvania, it served as the central seat of colonial governance and would later become one of the most iconic sites in American history. At the time of publication, however, the building functioned primarily as the meeting place of a British colonial legislature, its future significance still unfolding.
