  • DESCRIPTION: Drawn and engraved by J.J. Barralet.<br><br> A.K.A. Apotheosis of Washington.<br><br> A fine allegorical engraving depicting Washington rises from his tomb on a heavenly ray of light with the help of figures representing Genius and Immortality, while Faith, Hope, and Charity look on. America is personified as Lady Liberty, seated atop armor and holding a staff on whose tip rests a liberty cap, and as a Native American man with braided hair and a headdress, quiver, and tomahawk. On the open tomb is written, "Sacred to the Memory of Washington. OB 14 Dec. AD 1799. Aet 63. Hanging on the tomb are two personal emblems relating to his life, medals for the order of Freemasons and Society of the Cincinnati.<br><br> There are four know states of this engraving with this being an example of the fourth. This image was later used with Abraham Lincoln replacing Washington. A scarce print in any state.

  • CONDITION: Good condition save for several flatted vertical creases. Also two flattened creases in lower left corner. A nice impression.
