  • DESCRIPTION: Published in 1832 by Childs & Inman of Philadelphia, this lithograph by George Lehman, after a drawing by John Rubens Smith, depicts the original tomb of George Washington at Mount Vernon. This old family vault, located on the wooded slope below the mansion, was where Washington was interred following his death in 1799. Humble and unadorned, the structure reflected the quiet dignity of the man it housed. The scene captures a solitary figure leaning against a tree, gazing toward the entrance of the tomb, an image of reflection and national reverence, produced just as Washington’s remains were being relocated to the new tomb.
