DESCRIPTION: A extremely rare and unusual Revolutionary War satirical print in a reduced size and hereto unrecorded version.

This engraving, titled Das getheilte Bofton, is a German version of Philip Dawe's famous British satire The Bostonians in Distress, engraved by Johann Martin Will around November 1774.

With German text, this small engraving was undoubtedly meant for the German market and was also likely published in Germany. the print reflects German interest in the rising tensions between Great Britain and its American colonies. Will's version closely follows Dawe's original design while adapting the imagery and captioning for a German-speaking audience.

The scene offers a symbolic depiction of Boston's punishment following the Boston Tea Party and the imposition of the Coercive Acts. In the image, colonists are shown confined in a cage hanging from the Liberty Tree, a stark allegory for the city's isolation under British blockade. As with Dawe's original, the engraving uses satire to critique imperial policy and highlight the plight of the American colonists.

This small engraving was undoubtedly meant for the German market and likely published in Germany.
