DESCRIPTION: This mezzotint and line engraving of John Paul Jones offers a compelling depiction of the renowned American naval officer, shown in a three-quarter view dressed in uniform pistol in hand and with his distinguished cocked hat.

One of America's most famous Naval heroes. This portrait shows Jones during his celebrated naval battle in the North Sea between the Bonhomme Richard, commanded by Jones, and the HMS Serapis, commanded by Captain Richard Pearson. At one point during the battle "Person asked John Paul Jones "Have you struck?" (which meant to ask for quarter and give up the fight), John Paul Jones reportedly replied, "I have not yet begun to fight". Although historians cannot prove the remark was made, it is now part of American Naval folklore. Jones's ship the “Bonhomme Richard” eventually won the battle against the “Serapis.” Another one of John Paul Jones great quotes is “I wish to have no connection with any ship that does not sail fast for I intend to go in Harm’s way.”
