  • DESCRIPTION: This lithograph, after a drawing by inventor Robert Fulton (1765–1815), depicts a mechanism titled The Double Inclined Plane. Designed to move boats and their cargo between different canal levels, it features a large pulley-wheel at the summit that powered two sets of wheeled boats on parallel tracks, counterbalancing one another. Created during the 19th century when canals played a vital role in transportation and commerce, the system reflects Fulton's innovative approach to improving inland navigation.
