• DESCRIPTION: Engraved in 1566 by Cornelis Cort after a painting by Titian, Diana Discovering Callisto’s Pregnancy captures a pivotal moment from Ovid’s Metamorphoses. The scene depicts the chaste goddess Diana commanding her nymphs to bathe after a hunt, only to discover that her favorite, Callisto, is pregnant—seduced by Jupiter in disguise. In Titian’s original composition, tension and betrayal unfold through dynamic figures and dissolving contours, translated by Cort into finely wrought linework that preserves the emotional drama and classical elegance of the source. This engraving was part of a broader effort to disseminate Titian’s mythological masterpieces across Europe and reflects the close collaboration between painter and engraver during the Renaissance.
