  • DESCRIPTION: This finely detailed 17th-century engraving by Frederik Bouttats the Younger captures a pivotal moment from Book 11 of Homer’s Iliad. The scene shows the venerable Greek elder Nestor addressing Patroclus with urgency and gravity, urging him to intervene in the war as the Achaean forces falter under Trojan assault. With Machaon wounded and Achilles still withdrawn in anger, Nestor implores Patroclus either to persuade Achilles to return or, failing that, to don his armor and lead the Myrmidons himself. Bouttats renders the emotional weight of this moment with expressive figures and classical architectural elements, characteristic of his refined, linear style. Likely produced for a mid-17th century illustrated edition of the Iliad, the engraving foreshadows the tragic course of events that leads to Patroclus’ death and Achilles’ return to battle.
