  • DESCRIPTION: This etched self-portrait by David Charles Read (1790–1851), created around 1830, offers a rare introspective view of the English artist best known for his atmospheric landscape etchings. Executed with remarkable delicacy, the portrait likely stems from a watercolor sketch by his contemporary John Linnell, which Read then interpreted into print himself. The etching reflects Read’s technical finesse, particularly his subtle use of drypoint—a method uncommon among English etchers of the period. Though he was primarily celebrated for views of the English countryside and the Lake District, this self-portrait reveals the quieter, more personal dimension of an artist who lived much of his life in Salisbury’s Cathedral Close and later spent time sketching in Italy. As both subject and craftsman, Read captures a contemplative likeness, underscoring his place within the Romantic tradition of early 19th-century British art.
