DESCRIPTION: This oval portrait bust of William Hamilton Reid shows the writer encircled by a laurel wreath, a classical symbol of intellectual achievement. Reid (d. 1826) was a poet, political commentator, and controversial figure in Revolutionary-era London. Born into modest circumstances, he became deeply involved in radical politics during the 1790s, contributing to the London Corresponding Society and writing satirical verses and political critiques. His views shifted over time, at one point aligning with loyalist positions and acting as a government informer, before turning once again toward radical dissent. He is best known for his 1800 pamphlet The Rise and Dissolution of the Infidel Societies in this Metropolis, an alarmist but valuable account of radical debating clubs. This early portrait predates that work, capturing Reid at a moment when he was rising in literary and political circles.
