  • DESCRIPTION: This mezzotint by Captain William Baillie is based on a self-portrait by the celebrated Italian Renaissance painter Sofonisba Anguissola. The image shows the artist seated three-quarter length under an arch, turned to the left but gazing outward toward the viewer. She is portrayed in the act of painting a devotional image of the Madonna and Child on an easel, brush in hand and guide in the other. Dressed in a dark robe with a lace collar and her hair elegantly plaited around her head, Anguissola is depicted with quiet dignity and focus. The plate bears an inscription referencing Van Dyck’s admiration for the artist: "Di cui Van Dyk ebbe a dire, avere ricevuto piu Lume nella pittura da una Cieca, che dal suo Maestro"—a quote from Vasari praising the illumination Anguissola brought to painting. This impression is from a later state, with reworking in the foreground.
