  • DESCRIPTION: This 1682 French engraving presents a short half-length portrait of Marie Louise d'Orleans, Queen of Spain and first wife of King Charles II. She is shown turned slightly to her left, gazing directly at the viewer, her long hair styled with two braids at the front adorned with pearls. Her elaborate dress is trimmed with lace and jewels, complemented by large earrings. The portrait is set within an oval frame tied with a ribbon at the top, with the royal coat of arms below. Lettered on the oval frame is the production detail "De l'Armessin, sculp 1682," with an inscription beneath the image reading: "Fille Aisnee de Monsr Philipe de France [...] Roy Catholique des Espagnes." Marie Louise (1662–1689) was the eldest daughter of Philippe I, Duke of Orleans, and Princess Henrietta of England. Her marriage in 1679 to Charles II was intended to strengthen the alliance between France and Spain, though her years as queen were marked by homesickness and the political difficulties of her husband's troubled reign. She died in Madrid at the age of 26, without leaving an heir.
