  • DESCRIPTION: John Talbot (c. 1387–1453), 1st Earl of Shrewsbury, was a celebrated English commander during the closing decades of the Hundred Years’ War. Known for his aggressive tactics and fearlessness in battle, he won a series of notable victories in France but met his end at the Battle of Castillon in 1453. His death marked both the loss of one of England’s greatest medieval captains and the effective end of the long war with France.
