    DATE: 1663

  • EDITION SIZE: Paper size 12 3/16 x 8 7/8" (30.9 x 22.5 cm)

  • DESCRIPTION: This 1663 engraving by Pieter Louis Van Schuppen, after a 1661 painting by Jacob van Loo, depicts Pierre de Marca (1594–1662), Archbishop of Paris, within an oval frame. The Latin inscription records his name, ecclesiastical title, date of death (three days before the Kalends of July, 1662), and age at passing (68 years, 5 months, 6 days). Pierre de Marca was a French historian, jurist, and churchman known for his scholarship on canon law and for serving as Bishop of Couserans, Archbishop of Toulouse, and finally Archbishop of Paris. The image shows fine linear detail characteristic of Van Schuppen’s work, with inscriptions in the lower left and right of the plate crediting van Loo as painter (“Van-Loo Pinxit an 1661”) and Van Schuppen as engraver (“Van-Schuppen Sculpsit an. 1663”).
